Did you ever reach a goal thinking it would make you feel a certain way, only to reach it and the feeling was short lived or not what you expected? Maybe it was enough to carry you to the next day, next week, next month, next year...but you still found yourself seeking that similar feeling? Or you still felt unsatisfied or unhappy?
This happened because what you really wanted was something substantial and sustainable, not temporary. You wanted something that is inherent, something that can't be taken from you. Something you can take with you wherever you go. So what is it?
It's the ability to tap into what you really want, when you want it. The ability to access and use the tools you have, at any given moment. This is substantial and sustainable. This is freedom.
Cut straight to what you REALLY want by creating an environment (emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically) that supports how you want to feel.
Rather than seeing the goal as the priority, make the feeling the priority. This is work from the inside/out and the goal becomes the bi-product as you develop the capacity to tap into what you want, when you want it.
How do you focus on and create the feeling first?
Identify the feeling you want to feel. Is it joy, peace, happiness, confidence, gratitude, hope, pride, inspiration, etc.?
Take inventory of the people, places, conversations/words you use (to others and yourself), that either bring you closer to that feeling, or pull you further from it. You probably already know what these are. In fact, I'm sure your body physically tells you. However, there may be less obvious inventory to take. Pay close attention.
Move towards the people, places, conversations/words you use, that bring you closer to the feeling. Pay attention to when you feel it the strongest and use that as a starting point. Put yourself in the path of it. Surround yourself with it.
Pay attention to the sensations in your body, your energy, your spirit, as you surround yourself with it. Know that it’s always available to you. Rest in that knowing. What is it about these certain people, places, conversations/words you use, that bring that feeling? Writing it down. What are the descriptive words that come up. Is it comforting, assuring, accepting, peaceful, joyful, exciting, hopeful, etc.? Understand why it resonates with you.
Your body holds memory. It will remind you that these feelings exist inside of you, regardless of the situation or circumstance. You are learning to put yourself in environments (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually) that support how you want to feel. Listen to your body.
Practice putting yourself in those environments. The more you practice, the more your body remembers that you can access those feelings. In fact, the more you practice, the less you find yourself in places that don’t support how you want to feel. It’ll become natural that anything that does not support you, you will immediately turn away from or reject. In fact, it may happen that if anything or anyone who does not support you, will take itself/themselves out of the equation.
Create the space you want to live in (mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually). Of course you will have struggles and painful moments, it’s not about feeling perfect all the time. It’s not about running away from reality. It’s about learning how to tap into those feelings, and knowing that you have the ability to create the space you want at any given moment.
Your body will remind you, listen to it. As your body becomes more in tune with the feeling you want and the environment (mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually) you desire, you will find it easier to reach for the higher thought, higher belief, higher emotion, higher feeling, and higher action. It will become more natural to seek out and live within those environments and create those feelings. And as you create the feelings, the goals arrive. And you realize that it was never really about the goal, it was about building within you, the power and ability to create what you want.
